In previous chapter, you have learned that  рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП “need” is used to express the need. рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП “need” always takes subject with рдХреЛ.

For example:

  • рдореБрдЭреЗ рдХрд┐рддрд╛рдмреЗрдВ рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП | “I need books.”
  • рдЖрдкрдХреЛ рдХреНрдпрд╛ рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП ? “What do you need?”
  • рд╕рдм рдХреЛ рдкреИрд╕реЗ рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП | “Everyone needs money.”

However, when рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП “need” comes with verb, it expresses suggestion and obligation.

For example:

  • рдЖрдкрдХреЛ рдЕрдкрдирд╛ рдХрд╛рдо рдХрд░рдирд╛ рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП | “You should do your work.”
  • рд╕рдм рдХреЛ рд╣рд┐рдиреНрджреА рдореЗрдВ рдмрд╛рдд рдХрд░рдиреА рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП | “All should converse in Hindi.”
  • рдЖрдкрдХреЛ рдЕрдкрдиреЗ рдорд╛рддрд╛-рдкрд┐рддрд╛ рдХрд╛ рдЖрджрд░ рдХрд░рдирд╛ рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП | “You should/ought to respect your parents.”
  • рдЕрдм рдореБрдЭреЗ рдШрд░ рдЬрд╛рдирд╛ рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП | “Now, I should go home.”

Activities

(a) Imagine that you and your friends are planning a trip to a tourist place. Please make a list of 10 things that you need and 10 things that you should do. [Hints: please use “noun+рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП” for things that you need, and “verb+рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП” for things that you should do].

(b) Imagine that you met a freshman who wants to do know what to do and what not to do in college level classes. Please make a list of 5 things that you think s/he should or should not do.

(c) In a group of two or three friends who are learning Hindi, please discuss how you can further improve your Hindi language skills. Please make a list of ten suggestions that you and your friends should be doing to improve your Hindi language skills.
