Use of Progressive Aspect Marker with Different Subjects

Progressive markers (рд░рд╣рд╛, рд░рд╣реЗ, рд░рд╣реА) are used based on the number, person and gender features of the agreeing subject.

Person Singular Pronoun Habitual markers

Masculine/Feminine

Plural pronoun Habitual markers

Masculine/Feminine

рдпрд╣/рд╡рд╣ “S/he,”  and  singular noun рд░рд╣рд╛/рд░рд╣реА рдпреЗ/рд╡реЗ “They,” and plural nouns рд░рд╣реЗ/рд░рд╣реА

Note: When subject of a sentence is of mixed gender please use plural masculine aspect marker.

Negation of Progressive Aspect

In order to change progressive aspect sentences in negative, we use the word рдирд╣реАрдВ right before the verb. When progressive sentences appear in negative, generally, the verb “to be” in present (рд╣реВрдБ, рд╣реЛ, рд╣реИ, рд╣реИрдВ) are dropped, but not in the past (рдерд╛, рдереЗ, рдереА, рдереАрдВ). Negative of past tense keeps the past form of the verb “to be”

Examples:

  • рд▓рдбрд╝рдХрд┐рдпрд╛рдВ рдлреБрдЯрдмреЙрд▓ рдЦреЗрд▓ рд░рд╣реА рд╣реИрдВ | “Girls are playing football.”
  • рд▓рдбрд╝рдХрд┐рдпрд╛рдВ рдлреБрдЯрдмреЙрд▓ рдирд╣реАрдВ рдЦреЗрд▓ рд░рд╣реАрдВ | “Girls are not playing football.”
  • рдЖрдк рдЕрдкрдирд╛ рдХрдорд░рд╛ рд╕рд╛рдлрд╝ рдХрд░ рд░рд╣реЗ рдереЗ | “You were cleaning your room.”
  • рдЖрдк рдЕрдкрдирд╛ рдХрдорд░рд╛ рд╕рд╛рдлрд╝ рдирд╣реАрдВ рдХрд░ рд░рд╣реЗ рдереЗ | “You were not cleaning your room.”

Note: Please notice the extra nasal dot “рд░рд╣реАрдВ” in negative sentences with subject рд▓рдбрд╝рдХрд┐рдпрд╛рдВ “girls.”  As we drop the verb “to be,” the dot indicates the plural feminine subject in contrast to singular feminine subject.
