Instructor Video: Imperative Construction

Imperative sentences are sentences that express request, commands, order, instruction, etc. Like in English, Subject “You” is dropped. However, unlike English, Hindi has three different forms of the pronoun тАШYou,тАЩ which are used in three different sociocultural contexts, as explained below.

English Hindi Uses
You рддреВ рддреВ is used for someone who is younger in age, lower socio-economic class. It is also used with someone who is very intimate to the speaker such as friend, mother, and God.
You рддреБрдо рддреБрдо is used for someone who is of the same age group, and same socio-economic class.
You рдЖрдк рдЖрдк is used for someone who is older in age, and higher socio-economic class. It is used for anyone who one wants to show respect.

Use of рдЬрд╝рд░рд╛/рдХреГрдкрдпрд╛

In Hindi, formal imperatives do not necessarily imply тАЬplease.тАЭ Just as in any language, the tone of voice, context, and personal relationships affect politeness.

The adverb рдХреГрдкрдпрд╛ (please), рдЬрд╝рд░рд╛ (just, a little) is used to make a command milder/extra polite.

For example:

  • рдХреГрдкрдпрд╛/рдЬрд╝рд░рд╛ рдпрд╣рд╛рдБ рдЖрдЗрдпреЗ “Please come here.”
  • рдХреГрдкрдпрд╛/рдЬрд╝рд░рд╛ рдШрд░ рдЬрд╛рдЗрдпреЗ “Please go home.”

Negation of Imperative Construction

In order to make negative imperative, command, and making negative request, in Hindi, words like “рди” and “рдордд” can be used.

For example

  • рдпрд╣рд╛рдБ рди/рдордд рдЖ/рдЖрдУ “Do not come here.”
  • рдШрд░ рди/рдордд рдЬрд╛/рдЬрд╛рдУ “Do not go home.”
  • рдореЗрд░реА рдХрд┐рддрд╛рдм рди/рдордд рд▓рд╛рдЗрдпреЗ “Please do not bring my book.”
  • рдореБрдЭ рд╕реЗ рдмрд╛рдд рди/рдордд рдХреАрдЬрд┐рдпреЗ “Please do not talk to me.”
  • рдХреГрдкрдпрд╛/рдЬрд╝рд░рд╛ рдЬреЙрди рдХреЛ рдЕрдкрдиреА рдХрд╛рд░ рди/рдордд рдмреЗрдЪрд┐рдпреЗ “Please do not sell your car to John.

Note: Use of “рди” post verb place in an imperative construction will make it request, and not a negative sentence.

For example:

рди” before verb for negation рди” after verb for request
рдпрд╣рд╛рдБ рди рдЖрдЗрдпреЗ “Please do not come here.” рдпрд╣рд╛рдБ рдЖрдЗрдпреЗ рди  “Please come here.”
